About UsOur Mission & HistoryLeadership Broward Foundation began in 1982 as an educational program of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. It was designed to enhance participants' leadership skills, provide practical experience in community action, and facilitate opportunities for interaction with established community leaders -- all for the purpose of strengthening their bond to the community. Upon completion of the first program year, the graduates formed Leadership Broward Alumni. The strategic plan for this organization was to establish a strong alumni association, work with the leadership program and eventually establish an independent organization that would combine the alumni activities with the running of the leadership program itself. In 1987 a youth leadership training program was established -- Youth Leadership Broward. This program was initiated to educate select high school juniors about the issues facing Broward County and to encourage them upon graduation from college to become part of the solution. The final goal of forming an independent entity was reached in 1994 with the creation of Leadership Broward Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Leadership Broward Foundation's mission "to develop and inspire individuals to serve our community" helps stimulate leaders to work more effectively within their own spheres of interest and influence, leading to responsible and committed community trustees. The end result is a network of leaders dedicated to understanding and improving the quality of life in our region. |
