Our Mission and History
Our Mission
“To develop and inspire individuals to serve our community."
Leadership Broward Foundation, Inc. (LBF) is Broward County’s premier leadership development training organization with a 30-year history of preparing and connecting leaders from the business and civic communities to strengthen Florida’s future.
Leadership Broward Foundation programs help emerging and recognized leaders expand their skills and enhance their knowledge of local and state issues, as well as leverage their individual passion to make positive changes in our community. In addition to providing program participants with opportunities to build strong personal and professional networks, the Leadership Broward Foundation is the single best forum for bringing the private, public and nonprofit sectors together to work collaboratively on issues vital to the future of our community. In fact, Leadership Broward program participants and alumni have played critical roles in passing key economic development and civic works projects important to the community at large. LBF programs also help foster stability and success within Broward County’s nonprofit community by motivating leaders to become involved as volunteers, board members and donors.
For the past 29 years, the Leadership Broward Foundation has continuously provided unique opportunities to cultivate, expand and leverage the tremendous leadership resources of our community in order to bring about a stronger future for Florida.
Our History
Leadership Broward began in 1982 as an educational program of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. It was designed to enhance participants' leadership skills, provide practical experience in community action, and facilitate opportunities for interaction with established community leaders -- all for the purpose of strengthening their bond to the community.
Upon completion of the first program year, the graduates formed Leadership Broward Alumni. The strategic plan for this organization was to establish a strong alumni association, work with the leadership program and eventually establish an independent organization that would combine the alumni activities with the running of the leadership program itself.
In 1987, a youth leadership training program was established -- Youth Leadership Broward. This program was initiated to educate select high school juniors about the issues facing Broward County and to encourage them upon graduation from college to become part of the solution.
The final goal of forming an independent entity was reached in 1994 with the creation of Leadership Broward Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Leadership Broward Foundation's mission "to develop and inspire individuals to serve our community" helps stimulate leaders to work more effectively within their own spheres of interest and influence, leading to responsible and committed community trustees. The end result is a network of leaders dedicated to understanding and improving the quality of life in our region.
